India is divided over the Israel – Palestine war as India's ruling BJP supports Israel, and Congress supports Palestine

On October 7, Hamas, a ruling and armed fighter group of Gaza, Palestine, started the war by entering Israel's territory by land, sea, and air, which shocked the world. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF), known for their combat and warfare tactics, looked unprepared and clueless about the massive attacks launched by Palestine forces on Israel. Even Israel's well-known spy agency, Mossad, seems to have had no idea that such an enormous attack was coming.

The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on platform X condemning Hamas's attacks on Israel and called – Hamas attacks a terrorist attack. The ruling BJP in UP has also booked the students of AMU for taking out a solidarity march supporting Palestine. The BJP has clearly shown its stand on the side of Israel and against Palestine.

However, the attacks and violence can not be condoned in any way, and PM Modi has done nothing wrong by putting a message condemning the attacks. But supporting Israel and calling Hamas – a terrorist derailed India from its traditional stance on the issue of Israel and Palestine as the previous BJP government under the Atal Bihari Vajpayee leadership and Congress Governments also continuously supported and stood on the side of Palestine. Congress also condemned the attack on Israel but still stood with Palestine's cause. The Congress Working Committee (CWC) reiterates its long-standing support for the rights of the Palestinian people to land, self-government, and to live with dignity and respect.

Tensions between Israel and the Palestinians have existed since before Israel's founding in 1948. Thousands of people on both sides have been killed and many more injured in the long-simmering conflict between the two sides for decades, and notably, the killings of Palestinians have been more than Israelis. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have long been provoking Palestinians towards a full-blown war by Descreting the Al-Aqsa mosque - the third Holiest Site of Islam in Jerusalem, daily raids on the homes of Palestinians, and killing Palestinian Kids and Civilians, doing illegal settlements in the West Bank area of Palestine, Blocking Gaza - Palestine from basic amenities and taking away the homes and lands of Palestinians.

Given Israel's brutalities on the Palestinian people over the past few years, it looks like the Palestinians are looking at war with Israelis as a last resort to save their lives, dignity, and land, and Islam's third Holiest place - Al-Aqsa Mosque, which is why Hamas - a Palestinian ruling and fighter armed group came up to fight against the Israel occupation. The war that has now begun actually has been building up for a long time.

The changing of decades-old India's stance - by the current ruling BJP shows a major foreign policy shift as the BJP government has never condemned Israel's aggressions and killing of Palestinian people since it took over power in 2014, and now open support for Israel comes as a surprise.
